How Love, Rock and Stubborn Determination built Hotel Lech & Chesa Rosa

The Story of Rosa & Josef

They call the Arlberg the Cradle of Alpine Skiing, but to us, it is simply home. For generations, our family has lived within the rhythm of these mountains. Tuned into the cycles of Mama Nature.

We can smell snow before the first flake falls. We can read the weather by the specific way the clouds snag on the Omeshorn or the Rote Wand. It is a deep, instinctive connection to these mountains. When we talk about the mountain, we are sharing a piece of our history. You aren’t just visiting a resort; you are stepping into a story that we have been writing for generations.

Where Others Pour Foundations, Rock Was Hewn

Let’s be honest: Building a hotel in 1954 was either a stroke of genius or a very charming form of madness. For Rosa & Josef Grabher, it was a love story. Their love story. A plumber from the valley fell head over heels in love with a farmer's daughter from Lech. They carved two buildings out of the rock with unwavering determination and incomparable stubbornness.

No excavator. Just a pickaxe, a wheelbarrow and incredibly strong hands. Josef and Rosa bought a slightly elevated plot overlooking Lech am Arlberg, nestled among the trees with the mountains looking down upon them. Bit by bit, with unwavering determination and incomparable stubbornness, the first house was built in the early 1950s. Haus Lech, today’s Residenz Chesa Rosa, was quite literally born from the heart of the mountain.

From Bowling Alleys, Disco Balls and Arlberg Nightlife

In 1960 a second building rose. First there was a small warehouse, followed by two bowling alleys and a discotheque, and Lech learned to bowl and dance. In the 1970s this lively extension was built upon and became what we know today as Hotel Lech, added floor by floor. Season after season.

A Golden Emblem and Two Houses with One Soul

On the third floor hangs a golden emblem, Josef’s quiet declaration of love to Rosa. Two houses stood side by side. After Rosa passed away, Josef ran them both alone until 1980, when they were divided among their children.

Third Generation | Same Heart and Soul

“B’sundrig” A word you won’t find in any standard dictionary, but one that explains everything. It means something beyond “special”. A moment that simply feels right, to the very core. What began with Rosa & Josef still defines the feeling today: grounded, steady, and closely connected to the mountains.

Today Andrea and Andreas Wingelmayr run Hotel Lech and Chesa Rosa with their offspring. Andrea inherited her mother’s eye for detail. Together they transform the legacy to what it is today.

Unique by Nature. Distinctly Lech.

An apprentice plumber and a farmer’s daughter. A rock and a dream. Three generations and two houses with one soul. Some stories are best told by the Arlberg (or actually Andreas) by the fireplace, with a glass of wine.

Unique by Nature | Questions, Answered

What makes a stay in Lech am Arlberg resonate is rarely a single detail, but a feeling the locals call B’sundrig. It is a word that travelled over high Alpine passes with the Walser people and settled here in 1954, when Josef and Rosa Grabher carved this home from the rock with pickaxes and incredible determination. Today, this legacy continues at Dorf 263, where Hotel Lech and Residenz Chesa Rosa function as two houses with a single, independent soul. It is a place shaped by the rhythm of the Vorarlberg mountains, where the family still reads the clouds on the Omeshorn before checking a weather report.

Situated slightly above the village centre, the location offers both proximity to the Ski Arlberg lifts and the perspective of a quiet retreat. Whether it is the Snow Season spent on 305 km of contiguous pistes or the No-Snow Seasondedicated to the Lech Trail and formarinsee, the focus remains on Soulfood and genuine connection. From Andrea’s secret muesli at the breakfast table to Andreas’ stories by the crackling fire, the experience is rooted in the belief that a hotel should feel like a sanctuary. It is a story of stubbornness, love, and oak floors, where every refurbished roomand every heated boot rack is part of a three generation commitment to being Distinctly Lech.

Refining. For you.
Big things are underway.

A new website. A new logo. Fully refurbished rooms.
2026 is taking shape.

Things are being taken apart, drilled into, rebuilt. Then built again. And yes, even hung.
A complete revamp of nine rooms.

Oak floors. Underfloor heating. Colour.
Wingi’s design, with a touch of mischief.

Which also means the house remains unfortunately closed this summer.

We are, however, very much here. Always.
For bookings. For questions. For a lovely conversation, gladly. A phone call always works. Emails too.

As soon as the last craftsman has packed up and the snow settles and stays, the doors open again.
Most likely blissfully free of construction debris by then.

UNIQUE BY NATURE. DISTINCLTY LECH.
