Hiking | The No-Snow Season

Hiking

Some claim there are four seasons. We aren't so sure. Up here at 1,450 metres, there are really only two: the Snow and the No-Snow season.

But good news: there are still four cardinal directions. And each of them offers endless summer adventures in the Austrian Alps.

Summer‑Bright Instead of Winter‑White | Hiking Holiday in the Alps

Hiking Lech am Arlberg | Summer & Winter Trails

When the snow finally retreats - usually mid to late May, because the high Alpine is special. The Arlberg turns intoxicatingly colourful. Trails reappear. Alpine meadows start smelling wonderfully of wild herbs, and the forest floor goes springy under your feet. Somewhere in the distance, you’ll hear cowbells. Lech’s official soundtrack.

Suddenly, it’s not “just hiking” anymore. It’s trail running, mountain biking, summer gondolas, and ice cold dips in mountain lakes. It is the kind of holiday where you start most sentences with: “We’ll just do one more...”

Arlberg in Summer | More Than Just a Hiking Holiday

The foundation for any proper Arlberg day is a breakfast buffet of dreams. A perfect day begins at Hotel Lech with Andreas' secret family recipe muesli, artisan bread from the village baker, and Vorarlberg cheese and cold cuts. The kind of breakfast that serves as base camp for everything that follows.

Right at reception, the Lech Card waits. It opens doors to the most beautiful places in the Alps: summer gondolas, bus connections, and starting points that turn a good day into an unforgettable one.

The Lechweg runs from Formarinsee all the way to Füssen, quietly telling the story of an entire valley. The Arlberg Trail draws its lines more athletically through the mountains. The Green Ring connects landscape with legends, and around the Tannberg, history becomes tangible without feeling staged.

That's the difference: Hotel Lech hiking hotel in the Arlberg isn't just a place to sleep. It's the starting point for everything waiting outside.

And After? Summer Après!

After a day round, around, and on the Arlberg, movement turns into rest. The plan for the After - the Arlberg After: Into the sauna, regenerate the muscles, then straight onto the couch to sink. With the book you've been meaning to read forever, a glass of wine, and the fireplace flickering away. Outside, the Arlberg says goodbye with a sunset in golden tones.

Hiking Holiday Arlberg at Hotel Lech. Very Lech.

Unique Hikes in Lech | Curated be the Wingelmayrs

Lech offers 350 km of hiking trails. This is our family’s personally curated "best-of." Slightly opinionated, highly tested, and very Lech.

This is our family’s personally curated best-of list. It's slightly opinionated, highly tested, and very Lech.

The Lechweg | Follow the (Snow)Water 125km

For anyone who prefers very VERY long walks. It starts at Formarinsee, voted Austria’s most beautiful spot, and follows the Lech river to Füssen. Expect wild water, deep gorges, and a 113 m high suspension bridge in Holzgau.

The Arlberg Trail | 3 Stages, 5 Villages ~40km

This is a long-distance hike with a twist: gondola support where it makes sense and pure mountain panoramic. Sporty, scenic, and exactly right for those who don't just want to "be" in the mountains, but want to cross them. If you are really ambitious you could try and run it.

The Tannberg | A Time Capsule

History you can actually feel, see and touch. Grab the book “On the Trails of the Walser” and visit Bürstegg. The Walser settled here over 700 years ago, and their grit is still visible in the first settlements as it is still used as High Alpine pasture every summer. Arlberg’s soul, preserved in the mountains.

Skyspace & The Green Ring | Legends & Art

Part mythical trail, part open-air gallery, but with zero "children's Playground" energy. It leads you straight to Skyspace Lech by James Turrell. Sitting there at 1,780 m during sunset isn't just culture. It’s a shift in perception and reality.

Formarinsee & Spullersee | The Icon & The Secret

Two spots that prove hiking in Lech am Arlberg is about more than just elevation. Formarinsee is the one everyone talks about (rightly so); Spullersee is the quieter, more intimate beauty. One of Vreni’s all-time favourite hikes.

Sunrise & Sunset

This isn't about a specific trail; it’s about timing. Being on a summit when the Arlberg is still yawning at sunrise, or catching the last golden glow on a ridge walk.

Winter Hiking | 50 km of Groomed Paths

Winter in Lech doesn’t automatically mean you have to strap on skis. For us, Winterwandern and Winter Trail Running are perfectly valid ways to see the mountain. Around Lech and Zürs, you’ll find 50 km of perfectly groomed paths. Fini, the most beautiful girl dog in Lech, has personally tested every trail!

Lech to Zug & The Zug Loop

Follow the Zugerbach through a deeply snow-covered forest to Zug. It’s the perfect route for winter trail running, a brisk walk with the kids, or a long  sniff-session for your four-legged friend. The best part? It starts right at Hotel Lech. Out the door, into the woods, into the wild.

Zug to Älpele & Winter Forest Loop | Little Alaska

A nickname given by a family member from Alaska. “Little Alaska” silent wintery forest, resting mountains, a winding stream along the valley - good for the soul, even better for the appetite. The Älpele is your go-to warming hub for a quick snack or a proper meal.

From there, one could walk deeper into the valley towards Spullerwald and Tannlägeralpe. Or until the end of the world.

Älpele to Spullerwald to Tannlägeralpe back to Zug | Vreni & Fini’s Favourite

If you want to go deeper, this is the one. Vreni and Fini’s personal favorite loop takes you into those irresistible pockets of silence where the only thing you’ll see are animal tracks in the snow. It’s maximum nature without the crowds. It is very special!

The Oberlech Loop | Short, Crisp, Worth It

It’s punchy, it’s short, and it has just enough elevation to make that first drink at the top feel earned. Hike from Lech to Oberlech for incredible views and that "how is this even real?" feeling. If your legs decide they're done: take the Oberlech gondola or the bus back down. We won't judge.

Oberlech to Tannegg via Der Wolf via Kriegeralpe

The ultimate "hut hopping" hike. Keep climbing until the whole of Lech and its surrounding peaks are at your feet. On the way, you’ll pass our absolute favorite mountain spots: Der Wolf and Kriegeralpe. It’s winter hiking with gourmet rewards.

Skyspace Lech by James Turrell | Cultural Winter Hiking

This is winter hiking with a serving of world-class art. Hike from Lech or Oberlech up to Tannegg. Arriving at sunrise or sunset to watch the light change and shift your perspective. Very Lech.

Snowflake Panorama Trail Rüfikopf | The Highest Winter Hike on the Arlberg

A must. No discussion. Take the Rüfikopf cable car to the summit and step onto the highest winter hiking path on the Arlberg. The 360° view, you are literally walking on mountains.

Lech to Zürs to Flexenpass

Start right at Hotel Lech and follow the Zürsbach upstream through the Zürsertäli. Keep your eyes peeled: you’ll see hare tracks for sure, and maybe even a few chamois. In spring, you might even hear the marmots waking up. If you're still full of energy, add the Flexen loop to the pass.

Hiking Lech am Arlberg | Summer & Winter Trails

And After? Winter Après! Very Lech!

A session in the sauna to reset the muscles, a steam bath, and an ice-cold source shower. To revive and affirm life. Followed by a deep dive into the couch. That book you've been carrying around? Now's the time. A bottle of Austrian wine? Essential. The fireplace flickering while the peaks outside turn gold? Magical.

Hiking Lech am Arlberg | Summer & Winter Trails
Refining. For you.
Big things are underway.

A new website. A new logo. Fully refurbished rooms.
2026 is taking shape.

Things are being taken apart, drilled into, rebuilt. Then built again. And yes, even hung.
A complete revamp of nine rooms.

Oak floors. Underfloor heating. Colour.
Wingi’s design, with a touch of mischief.

Which also means the house remains unfortunately closed this summer.

We are, however, very much here. Always.
For bookings. For questions. For a lovely conversation, gladly. A phone call always works. Emails too.

As soon as the last craftsman has packed up and the snow settles and stays, the doors open again.
Most likely blissfully free of construction debris by then.
